are
citrus fruits in the Estensi courtyards and gardens proposes to
celebrate the essence loved by the Estensi, and make the most
of the courtyards and gardens of some of the most important renaissance
buildings of Ferrara.
Corso Ercole I d'Este which connects the Castello Estense to the
walls in a perfect straight line, could be considered the "symbol
road" of Ferrara: designed and built by Biagio Rossetti,
it establishes one of the supporting structures of the "Addizione
Erculea", the first European example of modern urban planning,
which redesigns the shape of the city, drawing the narrow spaces
of the medieval areas near to the imposing horizontal views of
renaissance architecture. The exhibition planned for April 2002
winds along this route - it is organised by the Garden Club of
Ferrara. Starting at the roof garden of the Estense Castle, the
guided tours take you through the most charming courtyards and
gardens of the Corso. At each stage, there are examples of ornamental
citrus fruits in vases, rare because of their species or shape,
chosen from inside that old, authentic, living vegetable museum
which is the private collection of Giorgio and Sergio Tintori
di Pescia, suppliers of the beautiful orange trees that permanently
adorn the hanging garden of the Estense castle.
Aside from rediscovering the hidden corners of the city, the visitor
can expect to be overcome by delicate visual and olfactory sensations,
reminiscent of ancient atmospheres that are still so present and
alive in the buildings of Ferrara, in courtyards and gardens where
the voices and the laughter of the women and men of the Estense
court still seem to echo.
