he
Association Ferrara Musica (Honorary President Claudio Abbado)
was founded in 1989 by the City of Ferrara and the Cassa di Risparmio
di Ferrara, in collaboration also with the Provice Emilia Romangna,
the principal object being the establishment of a residence for
an important European orchestra.
Since 1994, Ferrara Musica has extended its activities and is
now organizing an annual concert season which, besides the regular
presence of the orchestra in residence (since 1998 the Mahler
Chamber Orchestra), is offering concerts of symphony orchestras
and chamber groups as well as conductors and soloists of international
renown.
In the 2002/2003 concert season Ferrara Musica participates in
the initiative dedicated to Lucrezia Borgia with a concert of
the famous ensemble "Hesperion XXI" conducted by Jordi
Savall. Maestro Savall has chosen a programme of vocal and instrumental
works exemplary for this significant era in the cultural history
not only of Italy but of the whole of Europe. We quote his comment
as follows:<< The moment when the Borgias - an aristocratic
family of Catalan-Aragonese descent - captured the papal see and
the ensuing power, represents the culmination of Iberian penetration
of Renaissance Italy.
This concert offers a passionate, stimulating demonstration (by
means of a repertoire which we owe to a great extent to the famous
15th century anthology "Il Canzoniere di Montecassino")
giving the best possible image of the cultural, political and
even linguistic complexitiy of this contribution and influence.>>
